Studying abroad can be one of the most enriching experiences in a person’s life. Do you want to study abroad but don’t know where to start? Here’s some things to consider when you decide you want to study abroad.

How You Want to Study

There’s more than one way to study abroad. The big three are through your university, through a third-party program, and through direct enrolment.

Through Your University

Most North American universities offer exchange programs for students looking to study abroad. This is when you pay tuition directly to your university and transfer abroad for credits at your home university. Generally, this is over 1-2 semesters of study. This is the most popular way to study abroad and there will be a lot of information available through your university’s exchange program office.

Third-Party Programs

Looking for a more guided way to study abroad? Consider a third-party program! There are many study abroad organizations, such as CIS Abroad and CIEE.

When you join a third-party study abroad program, you’ll become part of a student community all studying abroad together. The company will support you in a number of ways, including through the application, visa process, finding housing, and organized excursions.

Direct Enrolment

If you want to spend longer than a year abroad and you would like a more self-led experience, direct enrolment may be for you. This is when you apply directly to foreign universities to obtain your degree. This is the best way to immerse yourself in another culture but can be difficult to navigate on your own.

Where You Want to Go

While you consider how you want to study, it also makes sense to consider where you want to go. Think about both the location you want to go and the universities themselves. If you’re going through your school or a third-party program your options will be determined by where they have agreements with. If you’re planning on direct enrolment the world is your oyster.

Getting Ready

Once you know where you’re going and through which method it’s time to get ready to go! Depending on which avenue you chose this will look quite different. It will likely require a student visa/study permit (although this may not be necessary for one semester exchanges), a passport, insurance, plane tickets, a way to access your money abroad, and somewhere to stay. This can take some time to sort out and may be stressful, but just remember it’ll be worth it.

It will also help to start building skills in the language of the place you’ll be studying in. Mondly Languages is a great tool for learning a new language fast. Get Mondly Languages for over 90% off at OnTheHub.com!
